A May 1912 parade through New York City, the subject of this print, shows suffragists taking their demand for the vote onto the city's streets. At the time, women in New York could not vote, and marches like this one were a deliberate way to show public support and draw crowds to the cause. New York would not grant women the vote until 1917, and the nationwide right followed with the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920. The print was made by the American Press Association, a news photo agency, so it was meant to reach newspaper readers as a record of the event.
