Billed as a May Howard extravaganza, this color lithograph advertised a burlesque production from the late 1890s, when the form drew large crowds with lavish costumes, comic sketches and chorus lines. The H.C. Miner Litho. Co. printed it in New York, one of the firms that produced bright theatrical posters for city and touring stages of the period. Its subject headings point to features typical of the genre: women performing in chorus roles, cross-dressing acts, and comic portrayals of African Americans that today read as racial caricature. Those elements make the sheet useful for studying how burlesque sold itself and whom it put on stage.
