Howard Chandler Christy, best known for his glamorous "Christy Girl" illustrations, turned to the home front in this 1918 color lithograph, whose title casts a woman's kitchen work as war service. It belongs to the food conservation campaign led by Herbert Hoover's U.S. Food Administration, which asked households to save wheat, meat, and sugar for Allied troops and civilians in Europe. Posters like this one urged women, who ran most American kitchens, to cook with substitutes and observe wheatless days.
