A woman in a rowboat pulls at the oars, and the title's pun on "pulling" makes the wartime message plain: women are rowing the nation toward victory. The poster was produced for the United War Work Campaign of 1918, a combined fundraising drive that gathered money for several wartime service organizations at once, including the YMCA and the Salvation Army. Its appeal to women as active participants reflects how the war effort during World War I drew heavily on female volunteers, workers and donors. The lithograph's bright color and simple, direct design were typical of the era's posters, which had to catch attention quickly on city streets.
