Among the many World War I posters on this board, this one stands out for its focus on women's work: its subject headings point to women telephone operators and to the wartime employment of women. Clarence F. Underwood designed it in 1918 for the United War Work Campaign, a joint fundraising drive that pooled donations for several welfare organizations serving American troops, including the YWCA. The "Back our girls over there" slogan asked civilians at home to support the women who were supplying the war effort both overseas and on the home front.
