A 1918 color lithograph titled "Hand it to em," the poster shows a Salvation Army worker passing food to soldiers in the trenches, with the caption "The Salvation Army gets it to the boys in the trenches over there." Artist J. Allen St. John, later known for his illustrations for Edgar Rice Burroughs's novels, designed it. The image reflects the wartime effort to supply American troops in France, when Salvation Army volunteers, many of them women, served doughnuts and other food near the front. Its sponsorship by the U.S. Food Administration ties it to the national push to conserve food and keep the army fed.
