Few recruiting posters from the Second World War speak as directly to women as this one, which asks them to join the Navy's women's reserve under the headline "Don't miss your great opportunity." Congress created the WAVES in 1942 so women could fill shore jobs and free men for sea duty, and tens of thousands enlisted before the war ended. The artist, John Falter, was a Navy Reserve illustrator known for his magazine covers, and his polished, modern style was meant to make service look appealing. The poster reflects a wartime shift in which women moved into work that had long been closed to them.
