It's a woman's war too!" urges the text across this 1942 color lithograph by illustrator John Falter, who designed it to recruit women into the Navy's WAVES, the Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service. Congress created the program that summer, and it let women serve in shore and administrative posts so that more men could go to sea. Falter's bright, confident figure in uniform reflects the wartime push to present military service as a patriotic duty open to women. The poster also shows how recruiting in the early 1940s shifted from appeals aimed only at men toward a broader national call.
