The message of this 1944 Navy poster, "Bring him home sooner," turns a farewell embrace into a recruiting appeal. It asks women to join the WAVES so that more men could leave shore duty and return to the fleet. John Falter, a Navy Reserve artist, painted it during the war, when he was producing many images for the service. The WAVES, the women's reserve created in 1942, filled clerical, technical and other jobs ashore, freeing sailors for sea duty.
