Asking viewers whether they have "what it takes" to fill an important job, this color poster urges women to enlist in the Waves, the Navy's women's reserve. The name stood for Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service, and the program was created in 1942 so that women could take clerical, communications and technical posts ashore and free men for sea duty. Printed in 1944, at the height of the war, the poster reflects the wartime effort to bring women into military work that had long been closed to them, and its direct, confident tone is worth noticing.
