The title, which Library staff supplied, borrows the wording of the "I Want You" recruiting call that made Uncle Sam a famous wartime figure, and redirects it to women. Printed in 1917, the year the United States entered the First World War in April, the lithograph urges women to take up the work and sacrifice the war effort would demand. This proof carries the artist's pencil signature, which marks it as an early impression rather than a mass-produced copy. Its earlier owner was the Rehse Archiv für Zeitgeschichte und Publizistik, a German collection of contemporary history materials.
