Titled "A Holbein woman," this small albumen print borrows the look of Hans Holbein the Younger, the German Renaissance painter whose sober, watchful portraits of sixteenth-century sitters set the standard for dark dress, plain backgrounds, and frontal poses. Around 1890, photographers often staged costumed sitters like this one to show that the camera could match the authority of painting. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a Washington photographer who later became known for her documentary work, collected prints of this kind, and the image preserves the period's taste for pictorial portraiture.
