Rather than a single scene, this lithograph traces a woman's life through its stages, from cradle to grave, in one hand-colored sheet. The record credits the publishers Kelloggs & Comstock of New York and Hartford, with a Buffalo imprint of Ensign & Thayer, and dates it between 1848 and 1850. Sheets like this were widely sold in the 1840s, when lithography made inexpensive pictures available to ordinary households, and they often presented women's lives in moral and domestic terms. Hand coloring, applied to each copy by hand, varied from sheet to sheet, so the colors can differ among surviving examples.
