A color lithograph printed in Indianapolis around 1883, this work traces "the life and age of man" from cradle to grave, a theme that had long appealed to printmakers and their customers. Its maker, Wm. B. Burford, was a lithographer working in Indiana, and the copyright notice names Lucy A. Demoss as the claimant. Allegorical life-stage prints like this were popular in the late 1800s, when families displayed them at home as reminders of the brevity of life and the passage from youth to old age. The title's blunt phrasing and the schematic idea of a single life shown in sequence reflect the period's taste for moral instruction paired with decorative color.
