Here a man sits with a cigar in one hand and a beer stein close at hand, the pairing that gives this label its name. "Solid Comfort" was a common phrase for the easy pleasures of a tobacco-and-beer evening, and cigar box labels of the late 1800s and early 1900s used such names and images to catch the eye of buyers in crowded shop displays. Labels like this were printed in large runs by lithographers, so the design tells us as much about what manufacturers thought men wanted as about the smoke itself. Its place among the "Gentlemen" images reflects the period's idea of leisure as a male, domestic ritual.
