A cigar label showing a smiling man raising a drink among bottles, issued under the name "Bracer," belongs to the lithographed tobacco ephemera that cigar makers printed in large numbers from the late 1800s into the early 1900s. Labels like this were pasted onto cigar boxes and were meant to catch the eye of a buyer standing at a tobacconist's counter, so the cheerful figure and the sporting, convivial scene were chosen to suggest good company and a fine smoke. The pairing of a gentleman with drink and bottles reflects how cigars and liquor were often marketed together to men in bars, clubs and smoking rooms. Today such labels are valued as small examples of commercial color printing and of the everyday imagery of the period.
