A smiling gentleman in a red cap is the detail that sets this label apart from the other cigar wrappers in the collection. Tobacco labels like this one were pasted onto cigar boxes in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when lithographic printing made bright, inexpensive advertising possible. Brands often used cheerful, well-dressed men to suggest good company and a relaxed evening, and the name "Old Sport" plays on the friendly, slightly rakish slang of the period. Such labels were meant to be kept or traded, so surviving examples offer a glimpse of how tobacco makers sold leisure and sociability to ordinary buyers.
