A cigar label built around a gentleman at his leisure, with the wording "Purity and Quality" set across it, shows how tobacco makers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries tried to win buyers through the box itself. Labels like this were pasted onto cigar boxes and bundles, and their art was often lithographed in bright colors so the brand would stand out on a crowded shop shelf. The smoking gentleman was a familiar figure in this kind of advertising, suggesting comfort, status and a pleasant evening at home or at the club. The word "Staylit," a name associated with cigars of the period, reminds us how much of the trade depended on brand names and promises of quality printed in small, decorative space.
