Titled simply "Single," this color lithograph belongs to a popular group of mid-century prints that contrasted bachelor life with married domestic order. Kelloggs & Thayer of New York issued it, and the Hartford firm of E.B. & E.C. Kellogg and D. Needham of Buffalo are also named, which shows how widely such sheets moved through networks of printsellers. Dated to about 1846, it reflects the boom in inexpensive commercial lithography aimed at a broad middle-class audience, and it offers a window into how popular images framed courtship and marriage.
