Hazel Roberts's 1916 color lithograph is a recruiting call to women, urging them to "join the Navy League" and "help the Navy" through local headquarters. A woman with a megaphone dominates the composition, a striking choice for a period when women were seldom shown as public speakers. The Navy League of the United States, founded in 1902, campaigned for naval preparedness well before America entered the First World War in 1917. Printed in Washington, D.C., the poster reflects the wartime push to bring women into volunteer and support work at home.
