A group of girls playing outdoors fills this 1919 poster, which asks American children to join the Junior Red Cross under the slogan "Happy childhood the world over." The artist, A.M. Upjohn, pairs that carefree scene with the organization's appeal to young people. The Junior Red Cross grew out of the American Red Cross's wartime work, launched in 1917 to bring schoolchildren into service projects such as making comforts for soldiers and helping children overseas. This poster shows how the organization courted young members in the years after the First World War.
