Unlike most pictures on this board, this small print is a bookplate, a label meant to be pasted inside a book to mark its owner, and it was designed by Phil May himself. May (1864-1903) was an English caricaturist whose quick, economical line drawings of London street life made him one of the most popular illustrators of his day. Dated 1895, the plate shows his graphic style at a small scale, where a few strokes carry the whole joke. Collectors of bookplates often value such pieces as compact examples of an artist's hand.
