Few nursery rhymes have been illustrated as often as "Little Bo Peep," and this 1867 chromolithograph stands out because it adapts the rhyme into a painted genre scene by John George Brown, an American painter best known for sympathetic portraits of city children. J. Howard Collier made the lithographic stone that transferred Brown's composition to paper, and the print was issued by Louis Prang & Co. of Boston. Prang built his reputation on color prints of this kind, which brought reproductions of paintings into American parlors and nurseries at a modest price during the 1860s. The piece shows how sentimental childhood imagery moved from gallery walls into everyday domestic life.
