A young girl with blossoms tucked into her hair is the focus of this 1867 chromolithograph, credited to J.G. Brown, with the stone work by Collier. Brown, an English-born American painter, was known for sentimental scenes of children, and this piece fits that pattern with its tender, unhurried moment and the simple dress of the period. The print was published by L. Prang & Co., the Boston firm that did much to popularize chromolithography in America during the 1860s and bring color reproductions of genre subjects into middle-class parlors. It is a useful example of how the medium turned painted scenes into affordable domestic art.
