A girl in a long dress stands at an open birdcage while a bird, the very thing she has lost, perches just outside it, and the title "The Returned Fugitive" makes clear that the scene is meant as a small drama of return rather than a simple domestic moment. This chromolithograph was published in New York by E.G. Rideout & Co. sometime between 1870 and 1900, a period when color lithography was popular for affordable sentimental pictures that were hung in parlors and nurseries. The Hatch Lithograph Company, named in the imprint, was one of the New York firms producing such work. Prints like this one reflected the era's taste for stories about childhood affection for pets, and the bright color and tender expression are typical of the genre.
