Titled *April shower mazurka*, this color lithograph was the cover for a piece of parlor sheet music, published in Philadelphia around 1862 by Lee & Walker. The image was drawn by T. Sinclair, a Philadelphia lithographer, and its subjects of umbrellas and women match the rainy-day mood the title suggests. In the Civil War era, illustrated covers like this one helped sell music to middle-class families, who often played popular dances such as the mazurka at home on the piano. The cover's number, No. 491, is one of the details that help place it among the many music covers issued in that decade.
