A promise printed in large type, a monthly check for the rest of your life starting at age 65, anchors this 1935 color lithograph from the Social Security Board. Signed into law that August, the Social Security Act created a federal old-age insurance program funded by payroll contributions from workers and employers, and the board needed to explain an unfamiliar system to a skeptical public. Posters like this one carried that message into post offices, factories and public buildings. Benefit payments did not begin until 1940, so the image asked Americans to trust a pension that was still years away.
