Johann Gaspar Spurzheim, the German physician who spread phrenology in the United States, is shown here as a head divided into labeled regions, each tied to a supposed mental faculty. Spurzheim worked with Franz Joseph Gall to build the theory that character and talent could be read from the skull's surface. He died in Boston in 1832, and his reputation there helped keep phrenology popular in the years that followed. The sheet was printed by Pendleton's lithography shop in Boston around 1834, when the "science" was at its height in American parlors and lecture halls.
