Freud faces left in this half-length portrait, a cigar held loosely in his right hand, a pose that became part of his public image. The mount bears the blind stamp of Max Halberstadt of Hamburg, the clearest clue to where the sitting was made. Dated to about 1921, the picture falls in the years when Freud was refining psychoanalytic theory and building an international following. His heavy cigar smoking was later linked to the jaw cancer that required repeated surgery beginning in 1923, which gives the image an added poignancy for viewers today.
