Few advertisements of the late nineteenth century carried a name as respected as Sir Morell Mackenzie, the London throat specialist whose portrait appears here alongside the Vin Mariani pitch. Mackenzie was a leading authority on throat disease and became widely known for his treatment of Emperor Frederick III of Germany in 1887 and 1888. Vin Mariani, a Bordeaux wine mixed with coca leaf extract and promoted by the chemist Angelo Mariani, relied on endorsements from doctors and famous figures to suggest medical respectability. The pairing shows how tonics of the era borrowed the authority of the medical profession to sell their products.
