Few hair products of the 19th century were as widely advertised as Rowland's Macassar Oil, and this example pairs the sales pitch with a line of verse by Lord Byron, a practice the firm used to lend its product literary prestige. Macassar Oil was sold in London under the Rowland name and took its name from Makassar in Sulawesi, though the oil was a commercial blend rather than an imported Indonesian product. Its greasy residue on upholstered chairs is said to have prompted the antimacassar, the protective cloth still used on chair backs. The advertisement is a useful window into Victorian marketing, when poetry and polished copy were used to sell personal care goods.
