Clara Barton's own collection preserves this carte de visite, a small albumen print mounted on card and made around 1865, the years when she was best known for locating missing soldiers after the Civil War. The format was enormously popular in that period, and Union nurses and relief workers often sold or traded such portraits to build public recognition for their work. Barton, who had served on battlefields and in army hospitals before founding what became the American Red Cross in 1881, is shown in a plain head-and-shoulders pose facing right. The portrait is a modest reminder of how wartime celebrity was circulated in small, affordable images.
