Wolcott's Instant Pain Annihilator pitches its remedy through a demon, suggesting the medicine could drive suffering out of the body like an evil spirit. Printed in color by Endicott & Co. around 1863, the sheet reflects the wave of patent medicines sold during the Civil War years, when makers promised fast relief with little oversight of what the bottles contained. Lithographed advertisements like this one were a key way to catch the eye on shop walls and in print, and the copyright notice shows that R.L. Wolcott claimed the design as his own.
