Few advertising still lifes from the 1920s were made with the care visible here, where a tube of Colgate's Ribbon Dental Cream is the sole subject. The print is credited to Robert Waida, who also worked as I. Ueda and was linked to the Clarence H. White School of Photography, a center of Pictorialism that taught artists to treat camera work as a fine art. Commercial product photography of the period was often used to sell an everyday item, and this print shows how Pictorialist technique could lend a plain toothpaste tube the polish of a painting. The image is in the Library of Congress collection and was published in a 1996 study of the White School.
