Arlington House, the hilltop mansion on the Virginia side of the Potomac, gave this view a vantage point over the young capital that few other sites could match. From its grounds, the viewer looks across the river toward the scattered government buildings of Washington, a city still half-built when the house's occupants were looking down on it in the nineteenth century. The house had been built by George Washington Parke Custis, the grandson of Martha Washington, and later passed to Robert E. Lee through his marriage to Custis's daughter. The picture is worth studying for how sparse the city looked, with open fields and few tall structures between the monuments and public buildings.
