This piece pairs two neighboring places on a single sheet: Georgetown, the older tobacco port on the Potomac, and the planned city of Washington that was laid out beside it after the federal government moved to the District of Columbia. The title's wording, "the Capital of the United States of America," reflects how the city was still being built and how its promoters wanted it understood. Georgetown kept its own identity as a separate municipality until 1871, which makes the pairing of the two names worth noticing. Compare the street grid of the planned city with the older, irregular streets of Georgetown to see the two places side by side.
