Circling above the capital, a Glenn Martin bomber marked GMB appears in this July 1919 view, taken just before it set out on Lieut. Col. R.S. Hartz and Lieut. Ernest E. Harmon's "Round-the-Rim" circuit of the United States. The flight was the kind of long, showy trip that aviators of the period staged to demonstrate their machines and build public support for aviation after the First World War. The aerial vantage point also shows the city's layout from above, which was rare in photographs of the time. Underwood & Underwood, a commercial photography firm, made the print.
