The Great Seal of the United States appears here as a color lithograph credited to Andrew B. Graham, a printer working in Washington, D.C., so the image comes from the same city where the seal was used for federal business. The seal's obverse shows a bald eagle holding an olive branch and arrows, with a shield on its breast, a design Congress settled on in 1782 after years of revision. Printed versions of the seal were common in the later 1800s, when they often hung in government offices, schools, and patriotic displays. The ribbon in the eagle's beak carries the motto E Pluribus Unum, "Out of many, one.
