The United States Capitol, shown here in a hand-colored lithograph, is a view of the building as it looked in the early 1870s, when its great cast-iron dome was nearing completion. Currier & Ives, the New York firm at 125 Nassau Street, produced large numbers of inexpensive city and landmark views like this one for a broad middle-class market, often coloring them by hand to give the scene a lively finish. Work on the Capitol's dome had continued through the Civil War and was finished in the early 1860s, so by the 1870s the building stood as a finished symbol of the national government, and prints such as this helped spread its image across the country.
