Addressed in ink to President Thomas Jefferson, this 1806 watercolor, ink, and wash drawing shows the United States Capitol from the northeast, offering a view of the building as it was taking shape. Benjamin Henry Latrobe, whom Jefferson had appointed to oversee the Capitol's construction, made it while the building was still unfinished and the new capital was struggling to fill its public buildings. The inscription suggests it was meant as a presentation piece for the president, and Latrobe's careful use of wash and light gives a half-built seat of government a dignified appearance.
