A column capital carved with tobacco leaves sets this drawing apart from the other Capitol studies on this board. Benjamin Henry Latrobe, the Capitol's architect, developed these "American order" capitals to give the building a national character, replacing the acanthus of classical Corinthian capitals with local plants such as tobacco and corn. The Capitol was set afire by British troops in 1814, and the rebuilding that followed was supervised by Latrobe and then by Charles Bulfinch, who finished the work after Latrobe resigned in 1817. Drawings like this one, made in the years just after the rebuilding, show how designers worked to tie the young republic's architecture to the crops of its states.
