The Marble Room sits in the Senate wing of the United States Capitol, a lounge off the Senate chamber where senators could step away from the floor. Its walls and columns are faced with polished marbles quarried in several places, which gave the room its name and made it a favorite subject for photographers of the period. This stereograph was issued by the H.C. White Co., a Vermont firm that produced many stereoviews of American landmarks around the turn of the 20th century. Viewed through a stereoscope, the pair of images would have given viewers a sense of depth in the room's ornate interior.
