This ink and watercolor drawing is a ground plan of the Capitol's central section, labeled as the projection of the center "according to the plan approved by the President, and in part executed." The inscription also marks the north and south wings and the lower rotunda, so the sheet records a building still under construction. The Capitol was burned by British forces in 1814, and rebuilding stretched through the 1810s and 1820s, with Benjamin Latrobe and then Charles Bulfinch shaping the final design. Plans like this one show how the architects arranged the rooms and the rotunda beneath the planned dome, and they reveal which parts of the scheme had been finished and which were still on paper.
