This plan of the Capitol's basement was measured and drawn by Alexander Jackson Davis, and its inscription notes that it was prepared for an engraver, so it was meant to be reproduced rather than kept as a single working sheet. Davis made the drawing in 1834 for the New York firm of Town & Davis, a few years after the Capitol had been rebuilt following its burning by British troops in 1814. The ground-level rooms of the building were still being finished and adjusted during these years, so a careful survey of its lower floor offers a record of how the structure was laid out in the early 1830s. Architectural plans like this one were a common way for architects to publicize their work and to document the national landmarks of the young republic.
