Floor plans of the Capitol are valuable records of how the building was meant to work, and this sheet has an unusual extra: its reverse holds elevations of cranes, the hoisting machines used to raise stone and timber on a construction site. The building's design passed through several hands, beginning with William Thornton's winning entry, and was reworked by Benjamin Latrobe and Charles Bulfinch after British troops burned the structure in 1814. Drawn in ink, watercolor and graphite, the sheet pairs careful architectural drafting with practical engineering, so both sides are worth examining.
