This plan shows the second floor of the United States Capitol, a level that held the chambers of the House and Senate along with committee rooms and offices. The sheet is labeled "C2," the second floor of a larger set designated "Plan C1," and the record identifies it as a reference copy. Drawn in ink, watercolor, and graphite, it reflects the careful, hand-rendered style of early architectural documentation for the building, which was designed by William Thornton and then reworked by Benjamin Latrobe and Charles Bulfinch as construction progressed. Plans like this one show how the Capitol's public spaces were arranged around its legislative chambers.
