This plan of the United States Capitol shows the central Rotunda and the courts arranged around it, drawn in ink, wash, and watercolor. It dates from the years between 1819 and 1828, when the building was being rebuilt after British troops set fires there in 1814. Architect Charles Bulfinch oversaw much of that work, and the plan records the layout of the central block as it was reconstructed. Architectural drawings of this kind were used to coordinate construction and to show how the rooms and public spaces connected.
