Few sites in the capital carry as much weight as the Memorial Amphitheater at Arlington National Cemetery, pictured here in a view dated to about 1926. Dedicated in 1920, the white marble structure stands on the cemetery grounds and hosts annual commemorative services, and it sits near the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, where an unidentified World War I serviceman was buried in 1921. The photograph is the work of Theodore Horydczak, a Washington photographer who documented the city's buildings and monuments over several decades.
