The building at Ninth and E Streets Northwest was the working home of the *National Intelligencer*, one of the most influential newspapers in the young capital. Founded in 1800, the paper was closely tied to national politics, and its editors, Joseph Gales Sr. and later William Winston Seaton, covered Congress and the government closely enough that its reports were widely reprinted. The caption card does not record a date for this photograph, so the view can't be tied to a specific year. Still, it offers a rare look at the physical setting where the paper's reporting was produced.
