Seen from the National Observatory, this view looks out over a capital that was still a city of open land and scattered buildings in the mid-1870s. The unfinished Washington Monument, which had stood partly built for more than two decades before work resumed in 1876, is one of the landmarks a viewer would look for. The print reproduces a lithograph by H.S. Packard, issued under a copyright held by Burgett, and it belongs to the popular genre of city panoramas that let residents and visitors take in a fast-changing capital at a glance.
